M1928 automatic submachine gun designed by John Taliaferro Thompson in 1918, was adopted in 1938 by the United States Armed Forces serving during World War II and later in the Korean War and the early stages of the Vietnam War. It was a favourite of soldiers, criminals, policemen and civilians ergonomics, compact size, reliability, high rate of fire in automatic mode and .45 ACP ammunition. It had a direct magazine of 20 cartridges or a magazine magazine of 50-100 cartridges.

It acquired a bad reputation during the prohibition period in the United States (1920-1933). It normally appeared in the media of the time, when it was the weapon of choice for gangsters. It came to earn nicknames such as Trench Broom, Trench Sweeper, Chicago Typewriter, Chicago Piano, Chicago Style, or The Chopper.
