Model 1908 pistol (P08), popularly known as the Luger, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic pistol, which survived Treaty of Versailles restrictions. It uses an internal slide, operated by an articulated arm, as opposed to the external slide common in almost all other semi-automatic pistols.
It was designed by Georg Luger in 1898 and produced by German arms factory Deutsche WaffenundMunitionsfabriken (DWM) from the year 1900.During years of its life, the Luger P08 passed through the hands of several manufacturers, who were responsible for the production of more than one million units of this legendary gun that marked a before and after in the history of small arms.
Although the first models were produced in 7.65×21 Parabellum calibre, its 1908 model is famous for being the gun for which the 9×19 Parabellum cartridge was developed. The name Parabellum comes from an old Latin saying 'Su vis pacem, para bellum' ('If you want peace, prepare for war').
The Parabellum Luger pistol became very popular due to its use by Germany during the First and Second World Wars and was a much sought-after pistol for soldiers throughout the 20th century.
